Route is snapped to real roads via OSRM routing between each waypoint city (not straight lines) — starts at Tuktoyaktuk via the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway and Dempster Highway down to Whitehorse, then the Watson Lake → Cassiar Hwy → Vancouver diversion, a Rockies crossing back to the main highway, then south through Mexico to Antigua, Guatemala. Ecoregions: RESOLVE/WWF Ecoregions 2017 (Dinerstein et al. 2017), live from the UNEP-WCMC ArcGIS FeatureServer.
Protected areas: live from the WDPA FeatureServer. The green-outlined layer shows only National/State/Provincial Parks in the US & Canada (National Forests excluded); the broader "all protected areas" layer (off by default) is what field-plot siting actually avoids, since drone restrictions aren't limited to parks. Field plots are automatically pushed out of any protected-area polygon; if an entire ecoregion crossing falls inside one, the plot is flagged ⚠️ rather than silently misplaced.
Field-plot methodology: a regular grid of stops every 70 km of driving distance forms the backbone. Any ecoregion crossing the grid would have skipped gets one extra ★ can't-miss stop instead of being left out. Stops within 20 km of each other are combined into a single multi-ecoregion stop. Ecoregions too narrow to register any sample point (⚠️ in the table) are documented as traversed-but-not-sampled.
Driving: "Track my location" gives a blue dot + live countdown to your next field plot, chime within 300 m. Browsers throttle GPS when the screen locks — keep it awake, or use the KML export in a native maps app for unattended stretches.
